What Is Networking?
Networking involves the connecting of two or more computers and other devices, such as printers, external hard drives, modems and routers so that they can share information, applications and resources or jointly access a server. Network software provides the monitoring tools and utilities needed to manage a network.
Types of Networks
- LAN network or Local Area Network, is usually a small network located within a specific geographic area such as a building or factory.
- WAN network or Wide Area Network, is a network that covers a large geographic area by connecting Local Area Networks together. The internet is an example of a WAN.
- WLAN and WWAN networks are the wireless equivalents of the LAN and WAN.
Key Components of Network Infrastructure
- Gateway: the point at which the network connects to another network. Can be composed of software, hardware, or a combination.
- Router: a router is located at the gateway where it determines the flow and route of packets of information from one network to another. A router can be either a software application or a hardware device.
- Switch: a switch directs the flow and route of packets of information as they travel from one segment of a LAN. That same LAN provides a dedicated line at full bandwidth for every two devices transmitting to each other.
- Bridge: a bridge connects one LAN to another.
- Hub: a hub connects segments of a LAN and directs packets of information to their correct location. It shares the total bandwidth among all users and is generally not recommended for business use.
- Servers: a server is the largest and most powerful computer in the network that manages the network data.
Your networking environment is the backbone of your organizations communications system. The key challenge is getting the highest level of performance possible from your network infrastructure while effectively protecting your organization from the vulnerabilities that can affect your communication processes.
